A note about the ' Capital Area Antique Modelers Association' (CAAMA) from Jim Coffin

"Folks

Attached are the notes from last Monday's CAAMA meeting.  Yes, CAAMA is alive and well despite laying low for the last few months while we searched for a meeting site.
Keep 'em Flying, Jim Coffin"

CAAMA Meeting Notes

April 19, 2010 at SAIC Building in Tyson’s Corners

President Jack Felter called the meeting to order at 8:15 PM with ten members and one two guests present.  Activities of the previous meeting were discussed.
Treasurer Dave Lacey was absent, however the balance of $710.10 reported at the last meeting should be still valid.
Our two guests were Hans Van Leuwen, a SAM member visiting from Perth, Australia and Reed Martin, a MECA engine collector that attended our CAAMA Collectos including the last one in February.
The discussion of flying fields continued.  Jack Felter had received the insurance certificates for the Culpeper fields including Inskeep and Mike Dale’s Aerodrome as well as the fields on Maryland Eastern Shore. Higgs farms and the Central Sod Farm on route 301.  Copies of these certificates will be passed on to the owners of these fields.  It was noted that flying on the 2.4GHZ frequencies would be all right at Byrd Field south of Culpeper as there would be no interference with the nearby RC field.
Joe Colly, our SAIC conference room sponsor, requested that we provide him with a brief description of ourselves for his use in promoting the continued use of the conference room, even if he leaves SAIC.  Send these to  HYPERLINK "mailto:jcolly@cox.net" jcolly@cox.net .
There is the upcoming Kudzu contest in Raeford, NC May 15 and 16.  Some AMA events have been added to the list of FAC events that have been scheduled in the past and the contest is expanded to two days (most have either made their plans to go or not).
The meeting was informally adjourned followed by an around the table.  Reed Martin commented that there have been no recent MECA Collectos in MECA Region 11 in the past few years.  A central site and a sponsor is needed.  Joe Colly suggested Loyola University, near Baltimore, might have a suitable site and is centrally located in the NJ, PA, DE, MD, VA Region.
Stew Meyer reported that he was taking over the Micro RC Cloud 9 web site from John Worth.  It will be continued in the same format with input from John.  John and his wife, Lillian have moved to Sarasota, FL.  The web site is subscription based. www.cloud9rc.com/
Marty Schindler noted that he was one of the original members of MECA and is member No. 2.  He also is resurrecting his Sailplane from the 1980’ and asked what engine he should use.  It was flown with a K&B 35 on glow in the past..
Hans flies mostly RC assist models powered with 4 stroke engines and diesels.  Hans noted that in spite of the expanses of land in Australia, he has to travel some distance to fly Free Flight and so has settled on RC.  He did fly F1C FAI power free flight models in the past.  He has retired from a career as a lecturer at technical or trade school and also taught a course in road safety.
For Show ‘N Tell, Reed Martin showed his Brown Jr. collection and described his interest in E. Wall engines, a series of engines that were available as casting kits in the early 1930’s (correct me if not accurate, Reed).  He visited a model shop in Delaware and found that the owner had a machine shop where he completed a number of the Wall engines and sold them.  Some are single cylinder, but others are multi cylinder and larger than the ones we use in our models.
Pete Carpenter showed a small RC electric model that he had finished, but not flown.  It is about 20 inch span and is a reduced size poplar RC trainer model from the 1970 era (but I can’t remember the name Squire?)
Jim Coffin showed his Ohlsson 23 powered Playboy JR.  It is about 15 years old and is covered in Polyspan that was died before covering with Higgins Ink.  I took a lot of ink, but still shows good color with not fade after all the years.
Next meeting date is 7:30 PM, 17 May at the SAIC building.
Respectfully, Jim Coffin, secy (5-13-2010)
