About CAAMA

The Capital Area Antique Modelers Association (CAAMA) was organized about the first of January 1988, both as an AMA Chartered Club (2605) and a Society of Antique Modelers (SAM) Chapter 10. Currently, there are about 30 members, most within the Washington DC. Capital Area (hence the club name). Initially CAAMA was formed to focus on SAM model activities and sponsored a number of contests heavily weighted by SAM Old Timer events. As time went on, our interests have broadened and now we cover most of the range of model aviation categories.

CAAMA members mainly fly outdoor Free Flight models and we have several sites that are available to us for testing and informal competition. In the winter time, we fly indoor models and are working on developing indoor sites in addition to the National Building Museum in Washington, DC. We are one of several model clubs in the Washington DC and Virginia area that fly free flight models. We fly with the DC Maxecuters (that sponsors this web site) and the Brainbusters of the Newport News, VA area.

Currently, dues are not collected since we do not have the expenses of a mailed newsletter, instead, depending on this web site to distribute club information and news. The gang gets together with the Maxecuters every Tuesday at 11:30 at Mylo's Grill, 6238 Old Dominion Dr, McLean, VA for lunch. Club meetings are held at 1:00 PM (or so) on the third Tuesday of each month following lunch at Mylo's Grill with an occasional variation (contest schedules, etc.). We meet in the back room of Mylo's Grill (check a Google Map for location).

So if you have an interest in SAM Old Time model airplanes or small free flight models in general, drop by Mylo's for lunch at 11:30 and join us for a club meeting the next time around. SAM is an international organization dedicated to building and flying models that were designed published or available as kits during the golden age of model aviation, from the 1930s until the beginning of World War II. SAM is organized into hundred of chapters worldwide, of which CAAMA is US Chapter #10. If you want to know what SAM is all about, try this web site: Society of Antique Modelers

CAAMA Club News Update April 2015

This update is overdue, but CAAMA continues as before. Spring is upon us and it is time to get ready for the outdoor flying season. Many thanks to Glen Simpers for running the indoor flying sessions at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C. Here are some updates on past notes that may be of interest. The club "entertainment committee", Jack Felter, Dave Lacey, Jim Coffin and Glen Simpers, are continuing to plan events and locate sites for CAAMA Club events. Glen has found a site at Piscataway Park near Ft. Washington, MD for a FAC type fun fly event 20 June. Details and directions are included in the Announcements part of the basic DC Maxecuter web site. Dave and Jim are sponsoring the Eastern US Free Flight Championships to be held at Wawayanda, NY. The tentative dates are 17-18 October. This is about three weeks earlier than in past years, so warmer weather may help. Details on events and schedule will be announced later when the date is final. They are also considering additional outdoor Free Flight events, details to be announced when plans are firm. Meantime, Jack has completed AMA club charter renewals and flying site insurance packets. The calendar below lists a number of events that we participate in. The events that may need expansion and more details, including contacts, can be found on the National Free Flight Society Calendar (NFFS), the Flying Aces Calendar (FAC Contests) and AMA's web site. SAM does not show a calendar of events, but does have details on the SAM Champs for this year at El Dorado Dry (most of the time) Lake near Las Vegas, NV (Society of Antique Modelers). Next year's Champs will be at the AMA site in Muncie, In.
